The Wentworth Hotel 1920 to 2020
These are extraordinary times. At the Wentworth, this was the year in which we were supposed to be celebrating the hundreth year of my family owning and running the hotel. Instead 2020 is turning out to be the year in which Coronavirus looks like causing more chaos than any other peacetime event in the last 100 years.
In 1920 my Grandfather came to Aldeburgh on advice from his doctor whose considered opinion was that the life of a hotelier would be less of a strain on his heart condition than practising as a Parliamentary lawyer in London. Subsequently, during the stewardship of my family we have survived being requisitioned by the army during World War 2, and survived the recessions of the 70s, 80s and 90s and more recently, the financial crisis of 2008.
None of those events, even when the British army was billeted in the hotel during WW2 whilst training on the Suffolk coast in preparation for the invasion of June 6th 1945, and in the process destroyed much of the hotel internally, come anywhere near the challenge we face now.
Looking ahead, when life does return to normal whether it be in a few weeks or a few months, the Wentworth will be there for our guests to return to as it has been for the past 100 years. We are doing everything we can to retain our excellent staff throughout this time and they too, will be here to welcome you back to the hotel.
We will continue to keep in touch and keep you up to date with Wentworth news by email and through our website and hope that all our guests stay safe and healthy throughout this very strange and difficult time.
With kind regards,
Michael Pritt & all the staff at the Wentworth Hotel
